Meet the Owners of Catalina Courtyard Suites
Jacob Vanderwiel and Roque "Rocky" Moguel became the owners of Catalina Courtyard Suites in 2024, bringing a combined four decades of hospitality, operations, and leadership experience to this independently owned Catalina Island hotel. Jacob is a fourth-generation Catalina Islander with more than 20 years in the hospitality industry, including leadership roles with brands such as Hilton and Hyatt.
Rocky brings over two decades of senior-level experience in operations, facilities management, strategic planning, and organizational leadership, including service as a commissioned officer in the United States Army. Together, they take a hands-on approach to every aspect of the property, from guest service and room improvements to long-term strategy and community involvement. Their shared vision: to honor the character and history of Catalina Courtyard Suites while thoughtfully elevating the guest experience, one season at a time.

History of Catalina Courtyard Suites
A Hotel with Stories to Tell
Like many long-time Avalon properties, Catalina Courtyard Suites grew gradually, with records and local stories pointing to construction and expansion from the 1960s through the 1980s. Scarri’s Lounge, an ocean-view bar overlooking Avalon, once stood where two of our ocean-view accommodations are today. Upstairs, the penthouse still reflects the owners who lived there, including furniture reportedly collected on their travels and a piano tied to former owner Vincente Scaramucci, which guests can still enjoy.
The past keeps turning up. In the basement, we found decades-old slides, plans, and film reels, and with the Catalina Island Museum’s help we have begun uncovering steamship voyages, trips to China and Europe, and vintage scenes of Avalon. Some of it now rests with the museum for safekeeping. Stories of a clothing shop and a radio station on the property are still being tracked down. Did you work here, stay with us, or have a family story tied to this corner of Avalon? If you have verified details, photographs, or records, please contact us. We would be grateful to hear about them.

What Our Guests are Saying
- KellyWe had the best time. This was a first time trip for hubby and I. I surprised him foe his Birthday and chose this hotel. What a Great place to be. Rooms were updated and we walked in with awaiting champagne. They knew that we were coming and were very accommodating with anything we needed. We loved the community courtyard and even met an amazing family visiting like us. Everything was within walking distance, or a simply golf cart ride away, so we truly enjoy this location. Front desk clerk and management was also very nice. This location reminded us of a lil Italian villa. What a Memorable weekend!
- AndrewWe stayed here recently for 4 nights. It is a great home base while exploring Catalina. Our room was comfortable and cozy and the courtyard was so relaxing at the end of a day. Thank you to the night manager for re-lighting the fire pit for us later in the evening too. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others. Thanks.
- CaitlynWe've been staying at Catalina Courtyard Suites one to two times a year since 2021, and it is hands down the best property in Avalon, especially for a family. We usually bring our twin teenagers, and being able to book either the connected family room or one of the ocean view suites gives us the perfect amount of space. They have a wonderful setup of complimentary snacks and drinks, and our absolute favorite routine is hanging out by the firepit with the evening music right before heading to bed. This latest trip was particularly special thanks to the staff.
- EileenThis little gem of a place is tucked on the far end of the boardwalk, away from the crowds and close to Descanso Beach. We stayed in the suite. It was sparkling clean. Very spacious. Comfortable beds, even the roll away bed. Full kitchen. Really felt like a home away from home. And the view at sunrise was magnificent! I would 1000% stay here again!
