Although it is not common knowledge, Catalina Island is, in fact, home to a large herd of wild bison. With the heavy presence of these animals, Buffalo Milk has been termed the official drink of Catalina Island.
So, where can you find the best Buffalo Milk on Catalina Island? Let’s find out…
What Is Buffalo Milk?
First of all, let’s talk about what Buffalo Milk is. Contrary to what you might think, Buffalo Milk does not come from the buffalo on the island. The Buffalo Milk that Catalina Island is known for is an adult beverage, best-enjoyed beachside.
Buffalo Milk is similar to a White Russian but with an added Catalina Island twist. Here’s the recipe:
- 1/2 shot of Creme de Cocoa
- 1/2 shot of Kahlua
- 1/2 shot of Creme de Banana
- One shot of vodka
- Half & half
Blend all of these ingredients together with some ice and top it all off with whipped cream. Garnish your beverage with some nutmeg and a banana slice, and you’ve got yourself a proper Buffalo Milk.
History of Buffalo Milk
Bartender Michael Hoffler is to thank for the creation of this creamy treat of a drink. At the time, Hoffler was working at Doug’s, now known as Two Harbors, in Harbor Reef. Hoffler was known for making up drinks and testing them out, but the Buffalo Milk was an instant hit.
